Before the coronavirus ravaged live music communities far and wide, New York City’s downtown music scene seemed an ecosystem all its own, robust, dynamic, and endlessly heterogeneous. With venues of all kinds and capacities, from crowded café front rooms to basement bars and music clubs offering a variety of makeshift-to-proper stages (in combination with often remarkably dilapidated bathrooms), musicians and fans of all genres and intersections could find places to play, listen, and partake in shaping the city’s vibrant and ever-evolving culture.

Though NYC’s venues may be empty, the artists who filled them are still around, continuing to contribute to and mold the creative landscape from their own corners of isolation in a pandemic-mandated, post-IRL world. One of these artists is @katekoenigmusic, whose experimental sound derives from folk and rock but is not confined to any formula

To celebrate his 30th birthday, @fictprof_ embarks on his first undertaking of a self-produced album '30', a thirty track project that embodies his musical development as both musician and debut producer.

“Ultimately, I just want people to be inspired to write. I feel that’s the unofficial tagline of this project: beats to write music too. I want people to be able to continue the creativity from where these tracks leave off. I guess the message of the project is: creative inspiration and communal creativity. We may be socially distant in this time, but we’re still able to find ways to create together.”

“We have our foot in both doors, which helps because it expands our horizons as songwriters. We embrace this musical style of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It can be our curse because I think our biggest problem has always been we’re too folky for electronic people, and we’re too electronic for folky, acoustic rock people. But on the flip side, it’s always our blessing because we’re music whores and we just like it all, the full extremes. Our secret sauce is that we write songs that we’re able to perform them with acoustic guitars or pianos, or we can do it à la electronic music producer style.”

We had the chance to speak with Smurphio of electronic duo @afrobeta on the eve of their latest album release for “Illusion Motel.” We chatted about the creative process in quarantine, embracing a reinvention of their roots and stepping outside of genre binaries.
