MARY IVERSON

Glacier
SONIC CO-FOUNDER / EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

I am a huge soccer fan but mostly of european leagues to be honest. With NYCFC (New York City Football Club) in its inaugural season this year I’ve been paying more attention to the MLS (Major League Soccer) and the first game I went to see at Yankee Stadium (where NYCFC plays home games currently) was against the Seattle Sounders FC. This brings me to our featured artist today, Mary Iverson. She designed the really cool Sounders’ matchday 1 poster and it’s very appropriate being that she is from Seattle.

Mary’s work is inspired by her knowledge of the shipping industry and the way it influences the surrounding culture and environment. Her work usually contains a beautiful landscape as its base, sometimes using a found photograph if not painted from scratch. She then positions colorful three-dimensional shapes within the frame which are most often shipping-container-esque boxes.  My favorite part of her paintings though are the precise thin lines reminiscent of cordage that follow the lines of her geometric shapes creating a grid-like web.

Mary’s art has been featured in Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose and in public murals all around Seattle and elsewhere. Make sure you check out her website to see all of her beautiful work in all of its forms, and keep an eye out for her exhibitions which may be taking place near you.
