IN THE MOMENT
The cozy, intimate confines of Brooklyn’s Knitting Factory provided the perfect setting for an upbeat, feel good performance by the Seratones last Wednesday night. The band, whose members include vocalist AJ Haynes, Connor Davis on guitar, Jesse Gabriel on drums, and bassist Adam Davis, sold those in attendance at first sight and sealed the deal with “Necromancer” which uses a device reminiscent of a part in Ray Charles’ “Night Time is the Right Time,” and transforms it into the driving force for body-moving magic.
WEDNESDAY 10/19/16 – BROOKLYN, NEW YORK
Haynes’ air of joy on stage is engaging, and endearing. I’d invite anyone to deny her prowess following songs like “Don’t Need it” or the band’s latest single “Get Gone.” Throughout each, she uses her combination of power, with what I call a ‘fluttering tongue,’ and soft, yet spiked high notes, to trap the listener in the moment.
The most memorable spot of the night saw Haynes come into the audience from the front of the stage to join the crowd. The cord on her microphone became detached from the base, leaving the guys to play through. Instead of panic, Haynes let loose and danced with the folks who’d gathered a circle around her while they all got wild. The mark of true pros, and more than enough to put a smile on anyone’s face.
It was a quick 45 minutes in total but, musically speaking, I was late to the party anyway. If you’re like me, you’ll have plenty of time to catch up as Seratones continue their 2016 tour with dates through Dec. 31st.
